Palm Beach is the busy one: the high-rise hotel strip, the piers with the watersports huts, the beach bars, the two-mile walk along the water. It is a wonderful beach for people-watching and for a swim in flat water, and it is the beach where visitors most often get the palapa rules wrong.

Who the Palm Beach palapas belong to

Aruba's beaches are all public, up to the high-water line and beyond. The palapas on Palm Beach are a different story. Nearly all of them were put up by the hotels behind them, and the hotels treat them as guest amenities. Many are numbered, some are assigned per room, and the beach attendants do check wristbands or room cards on busy days.

So the short version: if you are staying at a Palm Beach hotel, your palapa situation is between you and your front desk. If you are not, the hotel palapas are off limits, politely or otherwise.

Ask at check-in how your hotel allocates palapas. Some are first come, first served among guests, which means the same early-morning race as everywhere else, just with fewer competitors. Some can be reserved for a fee, some for free, and a few resorts have given up on palapas in favour of umbrellas they set up for you. Towel-saving is officially frowned on everywhere and happens everywhere.

If you are a visitor, a cruise passenger or staying elsewhere

You are welcome on the sand and in the water. You are not welcome under a hotel palapa, and the open public shade on Palm Beach is scarce. The beach is narrow in places and the hotel rows take most of it. Your options are a beach bar with its own loungers, where a drink minimum is usually expected, a watersports hut that rents chairs by the hour, or a reserved umbrella set.
